Many boat owners want to switch from fuel to electric propulsion, but many of the solutions available today are designed for larger vessels. If more small sailboats and motorboats are to be able to run on electric power, there is a need for compact propulsion systems tailored specifically to these types of boats.
Searine M360 is an innovation project aimed at developing a more compact version of Searine’s existing M360 system. The goal is to make the technology suitable for use in smaller sailboats and motorboats, thereby helping to reduce the number of boats with internal combustion engines in Danish waters.
Electric Propulsion for More Boat Types
The project builds on the existing M360 solution and further develops it into a more compact system that can be installed in smaller boats.
The development work includes, among other things, a new sail drive, a simpler gear design, and a mounting solution for both sailboats and motorboats. The goal is to develop a solution that can make electric propulsion a realistic option for more boat owners.
Further Development of an Existing Technology
The project is being carried out by Searine in collaboration with DTU Construct.
Searine’s current M360 system has already been developed for larger vessels. In this project, the technology is being further developed into a more compact system that can be tested in relevant environments. The work includes the development of key components and the construction of a prototype that will serve as the basis for further development and testing of the solution.
The project is being carried out in close collaboration with DTU Construct and builds on Searine’s longstanding affiliation with Campus Risø, where the company continues to collaborate with the research community on the development of new technologies.
Part of the Risø SME Innovation Platform
The project is one of 15 innovation projects within the Risø SME Innovation Platform, where companies and research institutions collaborate to develop and demonstrate new green technologies. The platform provides companies with access to research expertise, testing facilities, and strong innovation partnerships based at Risø.
